Ingrown toenails can range from a mild condition to a serious infection. Although all 5 toes can be afflicted, the vast majority of cases involve the big toe. Ingrown toenails are a common disorder, which is due to the toenail growing into the side of the toe. An easy definition is similar to a large splinter. As the toenail grows, it irritates the fleshy side of the toe. This irritation my increase leaving a toenail embedded into the skin.
The causes include tight fitting shoes, trimming the edge too deep, fungal toenails, injury, and high curvature of the toenail. Runners frequently have this problem due to jamming of the foot inside of their shoe upon impact. There are numerous treatments available depending on the severity of the condition. Simply soaking the toe in salt water may reduce the mild condition. In cases where a high curvature of the toenail exists, the nail should be trimmed straight across and not too close to the tip of the toe. If the toe becomes red, you should consult a Podiatrist.
Treatment by a Podiatrist is generally quite simple. In the circumstance, where a permanent removal of the offending border is required, a good cosmetic result is obtainable. There are 2 main methods for permanent removal of the offending border. The first removes the root through excision. The second uses an acid known as “phenol” to kill the root. The bandage placed on the toe is removed the next day. Normal activity including golfing may be allowed. This of course, is under the direction of your Podiatrist. To prevent from having ingrown toenails, be sure to trim the toenails straight across. Don’t wear tight fitting shoes and protect your feet from injury.
